CHAPTER 2. PROTEIN ENGINEERING

Rational Design and Directed Evolution of Protein Molecules

Rational design and directed Structure/98.html">Evolution of protein molecules are the main Research Areas in Protein Engineering.

Rational design of protein molecules involves creating new Proteins with predetermined properties based on theoretical principles. This approach requires deep knowledge of the Structure and function of the target protein molecules. Rational design relies on the laws governing protein Spatial Structure formation and the Mechanisms of Enzymatic Catalysis. De novo protein design consists of generating novel Amino acid sequences that do not occur in nature. Another objective of rational design is performing structural modifications on known proteins to alter their properties and biological activity.

Directed evolution of protein molecules involves generating libraries of nucleotide and amino acid sequences followed by the Selection of variants with the desired properties.
