Intensive Care of Emergency Conditions - V. M. Zaporozhan 2006

Preface

Class="center">Preface TO THE First Edition

Emergency conditions, which may be encountered in the practice of physicians across A wide variety of specialties, are aptly named because they require immediate, urgent Treatment. If medical care is delayed for a patient or victim, their condition progressively deteriorates, rapidly reaching a critical and subsequently a terminal stage.

Consequently, the management of emergency conditions is very frequently associated with The Use of intensive care and resuscitation. These interventions are aimed at supporting and restoring vital bodily Functions, requiring specialized knowledge and training of medical personnel, along with specific and sometimes highly complex equipment and therapeutic agents. Such Methods form the core of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care—a relatively new and independent branch of medical science and practice. However, specialists in this field, the anesthesiologists, cannot always be present at the patient's bedside in a timely manner. Therefore, physicians of all specialties who encounter emergencies in their practice (such as internists, surgeons, obstetrician-gynecologists, pediatricians, and others) must be able to recognize the onset of a critical situation in a timely manner and initiate effective medical care for patients and victims. This textbook is dedicated to this exact purpose.

The authors sincerely thank the staff of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care—Associate Professors M. P. Yuzvak, S. O. Ivanchenko, and Assistant H. F. Chornyi—for their assistance in creating this textbook.

Preface to the Second Edition

Enjoying high demand among readers—students and interns alike—the first edition of this textbook, published in 2000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Odesa State Medical University, sold out very quickly, prompting us to release a second edition. In doing so, taking into account the rapid advancement of science and the feedback from readers, we have made certain revisions in the new edition regarding the techniques of Cardiopulmonary-cerebral Resuscitation, Liver failure, and other topics. It has been supplemented with new chapters on "Polytrauma" and "Brain Edema and Swelling." Recent bibliographical References are provided at the end of the chapters, and previously noted errors have been corrected.

The authors will be grateful for any comments and suggestions regarding this edition.
