Oral Cavity - Salivary Glands
The minor Salivary Glands (labial, buccal, lingual, and palatine) are located in the mucosa, submucosa, and within the thickness of the buccinator Muscle. The Oral Cavity also receives the ducts of three pairs of major salivary glands: the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. The parotid glands and the Glands of the Tongue secrete a protein (serous) fluid. The palatine and posterior lingual glands secrete mucus. The submandibular, sublingual, labial, buccal, and anterior lingual glands produce a mixed secretion (both serous and mucous).

The parotid gland, weighing 20–30 g, is enclosed in a Connective Tissue capsule that is denser on its lateral surface. It is situated on the lateral aspect of the face, anterior and inferior to the auricle. Posteriorly, it extends into the retromandibular fossa. Anteriorly, the gland partially overlaps the masseter muscle. The excretory duct of the salivary gland pierces the buccinator muscle and opens onto the lateral wall of the oral vestibule at the level of the upper second molar.
The submandibular gland, weighing 13–16 g, is located beneath the body of the Mandible within the submandibular triangle. The gland lies superficially, covered by Skin and the superficial fascia. Its excretory duct opens on the sublingual caruncle lateral to the lingual frenulum.
The sublingual gland, weighing approximately 5 g, is elongated and located on the superior surface of the oral Diaphragm. Its capsule is thin. The gland features a main duct (the major sublingual duct), which opens onto The surface of the sublingual caruncle via a common opening shared with the duct of the submandibular gland, as well as several minor ducts that empty into the oral cavity along the sublingual fold.
