Introduction

This chapter examines the MAIN MECHANISMS OF Homeostasis which, primarily through the Kidneys and Lungs, maintain the constancy of the volume, osmotic pressure, and specific ionic COMPOSITION OF THE extracellular fluid, particularly the concentration of H+ ions within it. The interstitial component of this fluid is the liquid medium that surrounds the Cells. The life of an Organism directly depends on the constancy of the composition of this "inner sea" (see Chapter 1).
