Granular degeneration of the Kidney

The kidney is enlarged, swollen, and dull in appearance. Microscopic examination reveals the accumulation of large, bright pink protein granules in the Cytoplasm of nephrocytes. This is accompanied by the destruction of Cell/35.html">Mitochondria, The Endoplasmic reticulum, and the brush border. This type of dystrophy frequently occurs in Nephrotic Syndrome and indicates reabsorptive failure of the convoluted tubules regarding protein. This syndrome is one of the manifestations of numerous kidney diseases that initially damage the glomerular filter.
