Veins of the Coronary Circulation — Cardiac Veins

The cardiac Veins, venae cordis, drain into the coronary sinus, sinus coronarius (Fig. 17), with the exception of the smallest cardiac veins, vv. cordis minimae, which empty directly into the right atrium and partially into the ventricles, as well as the anterior cardiac veins, vv. cordis anteriores, which drain into the right atrium. The coronary sinus is situated on the posterior surface of The Heart within the coronary sulcus, slightly inferior to the opening of the INFERIOR VENA CAVA. It opens into the right atrium between the orifice of the inferior vena cava and the interatrial septum. Its orifice is guarded by a semilunar valve that prevents venous Blood from flowing back from the right atrium into the sinus during systole.
