The wall of the Urethra consists of three layers:

- mucous membrane, tunica mucosa;

- submucosa, tela submucosa;

- muscular layer, tunica muscularis.

The muscular layer is absent in the spongy part. The mucous membrane is rich in mucous glands, gll. urethrales. Paraurethral lacunae, which can be sites of specific and nonspecific inflammation, are located in the submucosa. The muscular layer is well developed in the prostatic and membranous parts and features two layers: an inner longitudinal layer and an outer circular layer. In the initial part of the urethra, the circular Muscle layer forms the involuntary internal urethral sphincter, m. sphincter urethrae internus. In the membranous part, the urethra is bounded by the urethral sphincter muscle, m. sphincter urethrae, which acts as a voluntary urethral sphincter.
