The fauces is the opening that connects the Oral Cavity to the pharyngeal cavity (see Fig. 196). It is bounded superiorly by the posterior margin of the soft palate and the uvula; laterally by the palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches; and inferiorly by the upper surface of the ROOT of the Tongue. Located in the area of the fauces is the lymphoepithelial ring (Pirogov-Waldeyer's ring), formed by the palatine, pharyngeal, lingual, and tubal Tonsils. In clinical practice, when examining patients for diagnostic purposes (tonsillitis, diphtheria, Syphilis, etc.), the condition of the fauces is of great importance.
