The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology
The concept that Genetic information is stored in DNA, transmitted from Cell to Cell across generations through Replication, and expressed during METABOLISM/35.html">Protein Biosynthesis via transfer from DNA to mRNA (Transcription) and subsequently from mRNA to protein (Translation), is known as the central dogma of molecular biology. It was proposed in 1958 by F. Crick and can be represented by the following scheme:

In 1970, American geneticists H. Temin and D. Baltimore discovered an enzyme in RNA-containing Oncogenic Viruses that catalyzes DNA Synthesis using an mRNA template (reverse transcription). This enzyme was named RNA-dependent DNA polymerase, or Reverse Transcriptase - recombinase (from Latin reversio - return). Following the discovery of reverse transcription, the scheme of the central dogma of molecular biology took on the following form:
