3. REGULATION OF ENERGY METABOLISM

The Regulation of Energy METABOLISM is mediated by neural and endocrine mechanisms. The rate of Energy Metabolism can be modulated by influences from the Cerebral Cortex. For instance, in an athlete in a pre-start state, oxygen consumption increases sharply, and consequently, so does energy metabolism.

A pivotal role in the REGULATION OF METABOLISM belongs to the Hypothalamus. It houses the regulatory centers for metabolic processes, whose reflex effects are realized via autonomic nerves: increased activity of the sympathetic nerves leads to an elevation in the intensity of metabolic processes.

Energy metabolism is notably enhanced by THYROID Hormones—thyroxine and triiodothyronine—as well as by adrenaline, a hormone secreted by The adrenal medulla.
