THE OLFACTORY ORGAN

In humans, the Olfactory Organ is located in the upper part of the Nasal cavity. The olfactory region of the nasal mucosa is situated within the mucous membrane covering the superior nasal concha and the upper part of the nasal septum. The receptor layer of the mucous membrane is represented by olfactory neurosensory Cells that perceive odors. The peripheral processes of these cells bear olfactory cilia, while their central processes form 15–20 olfactory nerves that pass through the cribriform plate of the Ethmoid bone into the cranial cavity and reach the olfactory bulb. From there, continuing as the olfactory tract, the nerve fibers pass through specific anatomical structures of the Brain to reach the cortical center (uncus, parahippocampal gyrus), where analysis takes place.
