2. STASIS

Stasis (from the Greek stasis meaning stopping or standing still). Stasis refers to Circulatory Disorders (primarily within the capillary bed) where Blood flow ceases, causing capillaries and small venules to dilate sharply and become engorged with erythrocytes. These erythrocytes clump together, lose a significant portion of their Hemoglobin, and swell, while plasma containing hemoglobin leaks out of the vessels and may stain surrounding Tissues a copper-red color. In the area of stasis, the vessels are packed with a dense mass of erythrocytes depleted of hemoglobin.

Stasis is relatively common in clinical practice. It occurs during vascular crises (Hypertension, atherosclerosis), acute forms of inflammation, and Shock. Widespread stasis in areas of inflammation can lead to tissue necrosis, which complicates the pathological process (e.g., pulmonary gangrene in Pneumonia). In most cases, eliminating the underlying causes of stasis leads to the gradual restoration of blood flow.
