GENUS DACE - LEUCISCUS CUVIER

The body is covered with large or small scales (34–93 in the lateral line). The lateral line is complete. The preorbital bone does not extend past the anterior margin of the eye. The HEAD is compressed laterally. The Mouth is terminal, subterminal, or inferior (crescent-shaped). The lower jaw lacks a tubercle that fits into the notch of the upper jaw. The Lips are thin, with the lower lip interrupted in the middle. The gill rakers are short, numbering 5–30. The dorsal fin is situated above the pelvic fins and has 7–9 branched rays; the anal fin (in Old World species) has 7–11 (12) branched rays. The belly behind the pelvic fins lacks a keel devoid of scales.

Distributed across Europe, Asia Minor, East and West Asia, partly Central Asia, and North America. The genus is polymorphic, comprising dozens of species. Two species are found in Ukraine.
