Fig. 51. French ide Telestes souffia
Body elongated, slightly laterally compressed, its maximum depth is 20.9-24.1 (averaging 23.0)% of body length. Dorsal and ventral profiles gently convex, rounded, not compressed laterally. Caudal peduncle is 23.3% of body length. Unpaired fins straight-truncated, sometimes with a slight notch, paired and caudal fins rounded, the latter with a significant notch. Dorsal fin originates behind the base of pelvic fins, typically level with the middle of the pelvic fin base. The first hard ray in the dorsal fin is very short, sometimes vestigial. Pectoral fin length significantly exceeds half the pectoroventral distance. An elongated scale is present at the base of pelvic fins. The length of the upper lobe of the caudal fin is slightly less than that of the lower lobe. Relatively small scales densely cover the entire body. Lateral line is complete, curving in an arc towards the belly (below the longitudinal body axis) from THE ORIGIN OF pectoral fins to the end of the Base of the anal fin, and runs almost straight along the caudal peduncle to the end of the trunk. Sometimes it falls short of the caudal fin origin by one or two scales. HEAD length is slightly greater than or equal to maximum body depth. Snout blunt, short, its length less than interorbital width. Mouth relatively small, inferior, semi-lunar, its apex level with the lower margin of the eye, occasionally level with the middle of the eye. Lower jaw longer than upper, rarely jaws of approximately equal length. Eyes fairly large, their diameter fitting more than twice into the postorbital distance. Forehead convex, wide, averaging 33.1% of head length. Pharyngeal Teeth biserial, laterally compressed, with a small hook at the apex. Abdominal cavity dark. A fairly wide dark stripe runs along the sides of the body. Abdominal cavity dark.
Distributed in the river basins of the Rhône, Var, Po, Arche, upper Rhine, and Danube. In Ukraine, it occurs exclusively in the Transcarpathian region, mainly inhabiting the middle and lower sections of the lower courses of the Uzh, Latorica, Borzhava, Rika, Tereblia, Teresva, Shopurka, and Tisa rivers, as well as the Tereblia Reservoir. A rather rare, low-abundant fish. Listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine.
