FISHES OF THE FAMILY CYPRINIDAE IN THE WATER BODIES OF UKRAINE - V. V. Zamorov - 2015

GENUS ROACH - RUTILUS RAFINESQUE

The body is elongated or relatively deep, slightly compressed laterally. The back and belly in front of the pelvic fins are rounded. The belly behind the pelvic fins either has a weakly developed, scale-covered keel or is rounded. The HEAD is laterally compressed. The Mouth is terminal or subterminal, semi-lunar, and relatively small. The posterior end of the lower jaw extends slightly beyond the vertical of the anterior margin of the eye. Barbels are absent. Scales are large or medium-sized. The lateral line is always complete, with 33-69 scales. The gill membranes are attached at the vertical of the posterior margin of the preoperculo or slightly anterior to it. The gill rakers are short, numbering 6-17 on the first gill arch. D (II) III- IV 7-11 (12), originating above the Base of the pelvic fins; A (III) IV 7-13, originating behind the vertical of the posterior end of the dorsal fin base. Pharyngeal Teeth are uniserial. The Abdominal cavity is light-colored, sometimes dark.

Representatives of the genus are distributed in the Water bodies of Europe, Siberia, Asia Minor, Syria, the Caucasus, and the Aral Sea basin. The genus includes 15-16 species, three of which are known in Ukraine.
