Slide 90. Pituitary gland.
Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.
Magnification: х80.
Under low magnification, one can distinguish the anterior (glandular), more intensely stained part — the adenohypophysis (1), and the posterior, lighter part — the neurohypophysis (2) of the gland. In some slides, it is visible that the neurohypophysis contains an internal cavity that continues into the infundibulum. The infundibulum connects the Pituitary Gland to the Base of the Brain. 3 — Blood Vessels.
In the anterior part (anterior, intermediate, and tuberal lobes), large Cells with pink granules — acidophilic endocrinocytes (4), and a smaller number of cells with blue granules — basophilic endocrinocytes (5), are clearly distinguishable. About 60% of the cells stain weakly; these are chromophobic (6) endocrinocytes, which can only be observed under high magnification. The endocrinocytes tend to arrange themselves in elongated multicellular clusters (trabeculae or cords) surrounding numerous sinusoidal capillaries (7).
The neurohypophysis (2) is light-colored and contains spindle-shaped or stellate cells — pituicytes.
