At low magnification, we observe the capsule (1), from which interlobular Connective Tissue septa (2) extend deep into the organ. Blood and Lymphatic vessels (3) and nerves are located within them. The bulk of the organ consists of follicles (4). The follicle is round in shape. Its wall is formed by a single layer of Cells, the thyrocytes (5). Thyrocytes of cuboidal, columnar, or squamous shape (depending on the functional state of the organ) with large nuclei are distinguished. The lumen of the follicles contains colloid (6) with thyroxine, which appears as a homogeneous bright pink mass. Clusters of thyrocytes lacking a lumen can be found between the follicles—these are either interfollicular islands (7) or an oblique section through the follicular wall.
