This slide is a whole mount of subcutaneous Connective Tissue, and therefore varies in thickness. Choose a thin, transparent area. Against the Background of the transparent amorphous ground substance (1), one can observe Cells and fibers: thick, slightly wavy Collagen fibers (2), and thin, straight, often branching elastic fibers (3). Fibroblasts (4) appear as cells with a light, rounded Nucleus and cytoplasmic processes; their Cytoplasm is gray. Macrophages (5) contain a smaller nucleus than fibroblasts and a darker, vacuolated cytoplasm with distinct, irregular borders. Lymphocytes (6) and granulocytes are also occasionally found among the cells.
