WORKSHOP IN HISTOLOGY, CYTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY - 2016

Chapter 4. TISSUES

Slide 27. Simple cuboidal epithelium of renal tubules.

Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x400.

Under low magnification, select a tubule from the renal medulla with well-defined borders, lined with epithelium and possessing a visible lumen.

The epithelial Cells (1) of the tubule wall have approximately equal width and height, which is characteristic of cuboidal epithelium in cross-sections. Cell borders are clearly visible. The nuclei (2) of the epithelial cells are round and located nearly in the center of The Cell (the second hallmark of cuboidal epithelium). Within the epithelial cells, we distinguish the apical (3) and basal (4) regions. The tubule is surrounded by loose Fibrous Connective Tissue (5).
