We locate rounded structures—follicles (1)—in the section. Each of them contains a primary oocyte (ovum). This is a large, rounded Cell (2) with a centrally located Nucleus (3). The oocyte Cytoplasm (ooplasm) (4) is stained pink. The oocyte features a primary membrane—the oolemma (5)—and a secondary membrane—the zona pellucida (6). Externally, the oocyte is surrounded by one or more layers of follicular epithelial Cells (7), which appear as rows of nuclei around the oocyte. In a vesicular (antral) follicle (containing an internal cavity), a Connective Tissue layer—the theca (8)—is also visible.
