PRACTICAL COURSE IN HISTOLOGY, CYTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY - 2016

Chapter 5. SPECIAL HISTOLOGY

Digestive System

Slide 109. Appendix (Vermiform appendix).

Staining: hematoxylin and eosin.

Magnification: x80.

The slide shows a cross-section of the organ. At low magnification, the lumen (1) is visible, lined with a simple columnar epithelium (2) of the mucosa. The epithelium forms sparse crypts (3) containing a relatively small number of goblet Cells. The epithelium and the underlying lamina propria of the mucosa are infiltrated with lymphocytes. The lamina propria contains numerous lymphoid follicles (4), most of which feature germinal centers (5). The muscularis mucosae, typical of the Large Intestine, consists of two layers. The muscular coat (6) is formed by two layers of smooth myocytes, though it is much less developed than in other PARTS OF THE intestine. The serosa (7) includes a thick layer of Connective Tissue, in which cross-sections of Blood Vessels are readily identified.
