The wall of the Large Intestine consists of the following tunics: mucosa, submucosa, muscular layer, and serosa or, in certain areas, adventitia.

The mucous membrane lacks villi, containing only crypts (1) which are more numerous and deeper than those in the Small Intestine. The surface of the mucosa is lined with simple columnar epithelium (2). The epithelium contains microvillous columnar Cells (colonocytes) and goblet cells with light, transparent Cytoplasm. The Connective Tissue of the lamina propria (3) fills the spaces between the crypts, and frequently shows accumulations of lymphocytes known as lymphoid nodules (4). These can be quite large and extend into the submucosa (5). The muscularis mucosae of the large intestine (6) is thin.

The muscular layer consists of an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer of smooth myocytes.

The serous coat has a typical Structure.
