For a General Overview of The Structure of the Tongue, see slide №96. This section clearly demonstrates the filiform papillae (1). They have a conical or saber-like shape and are covered with Cytology/practical/35.html">Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium (2). The core of the papilla is formed by a broad projection (3) of the lamina propria of the mucous membrane. Adjacent to the filiform papilla, a fungiform papilla (4) can be located, which, unlike the filiform one, features a broadened apex covered with stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium. 5 - Muscles of the tongue.
