Predominantly herbs, sometimes lianas and epiphytes, more rarely aquatic plants. Leaves basal or cauline, alternate, spiral, rarely distichous, mostly petiolate. Leaf venation pinnate or reticulate. Flowers small, gathered into a spadix with a more or less developed spathe, bisexual or unisexual, perianth of six or four segments, free or connate, stamens six or four, gynoecium formed of two to three connate carpels. Ovary free or embedded in the inflorescence axis, unilocular, rarely tri- or multilocular, fruits berry-like, rarely dry. Represented in the flora of Ukraine by two families - Araceae and Lemnaceae.
