Perennial or annual freshwater plants. Rhizomes and stems are submerged in Water. Leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, occasionally whorled, sessile or petiolate, varying in shape. Flowers are small, arranged in axillary spike-like inflorescences. Flowers are bisexual, actinomorphic, predominantly tetramerous. The gynoecium is apocarpous, consisting of two to three (five, eight) carpels. It includes up to 107 species across two families: Potamogetonaceae and Ruppiaceae.
