Perennial herbaceous plants. Inflorescence is a raceme, floral formula: *P3+3 A3+3 G3(6). Fruit is an aggregate follicle.
Rannoch-rush (Scheuchzeria palustris L.). A plant with a short, slender rhizome and a stem 15-25 cm high. The rhizome is creeping, nodular, covered with remnants of leaf sheaths. The stems bear two to three linear leaves with long sheaths; phyllotaxy is alternate. The inflorescence is terminal, racemose, consisting of three to eight flowers with bracts. Perianth is yellowish-brown, stamens six, longer than the perianth, styles 3, rarely 6, carpels three. Blooms from May to July.
Fruit is an aggregate follicle, follicles are inflated, seeds are small, endosperm-free, and dispersed by Water.
Grows in oligotrophic Sphagnum bogs, mainly in the Carpathians and Polissya, occasionally in the forest areas of the Forest-Steppe. A peat-forming plant.
