X. SEED PLANTS
Order Myrtales
Trees, shrubs, and herbs with simple and mostly entire leaves featuring more or less rudimentary stipules. Phyllotaxy is opposite, less commonly alternate, and rarely whorled. Flowers are bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, mostly four- or five-merous, with a well-developed hypanthium, a double perianth, and are sometimes apetalous. Sepals appear as lobes of the hypanthium and are occasionally reduced. Petals are free and alternate with the sepals. Stamens are numerous. Stamen filaments are inflexed in the bud or rarely straight. The gynoecium is paracarpous or, more frequently, secondary syncarpous, formed by two to many (often four to five) carpels, with stylodia fused into a single style featuring a lobed or straight stigma. The Ovary ranges from superior, half-inferior, to inferior, and from multilocular to unilocular, with one to two or many ovules per carpel. Fruits are of various types.
A characteristic feature of nearly all Myrtales is the presence of a concave receptacle.
The order comprises 16 families, 428 genera, and 9,300–10,200 species, a significant portion of which are tropical plants. In Ukraine, it is represented by five families, 12 genera, and 67 species.
