The family comprises about 400 species.

Philonotis fontana is a dioecious plant forming dense, yellowish-green or bluish-green turfs that are densely felted inside (Fig. 95). The stem is 3–10 cm long. Leaves range from erect-spreading to slightly secund, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate with a plicate base, serrate margins, and a broad costa. They produce spores in summer.

They grow in damp meadows, peatlands, ditches, near springs, in streams, along bogs, and on wet rocks.
