Family Fontinalaceae

The family comprises about 70 species.

Fontinalis hypnoides is a perennial dioecious plant growing up to 20 cm tall. Its shoots are loosely leafy, light or dark green; those of male plants are short and blunt, while female ones are elongated and pointed. The leaves are lanceolate, non-carinate, and gradually tapering. The capsule is immersed in the perichaetium, featuring a double peristome. The calyptra is conic-mitriform. The plant occurs in standing and running waters.

Fontinalis antipyretica features loosely leafy, glossy shoots ranging from dark to blackish-green. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, sharply keeled, pointed or obtuse. It grows in standing and flowing Water on stones and wood at depths of 2 meters or more. It is consumed by mayfly and stonefly larvae, nematodes, crayfish, and cyprinid fish.
