13.3.2. Symplastic Transport

Symplast is the interconnected system of plant protoplasts. The protoplasts of adjacent Cells are linked together by plasmodesmata—cytoplasmic strands passing through Pores in the Cell walls (Fig. 13.8, B). Water, along with any dissolved solutes, once inside the protoplast of a single cell, can move further through the symplast without crossing any membranes. This movement is sometimes facilitated by cytoplasmic streaming. Symplastic water transport is more important for the plant than Vacuolar Transport.
