5. FUNDAMENTALS OF EMBRYOLOGY
Neurulation
As a result of Gastrulation, an embryo is formed consisting of three germ layers: the inner endoderm, the intermediate mesoderm, and the outer ectoderm. Directly beneath the dorsal region of the ectoderm lies the chordamesoderm material. The interaction between this material and the overlying ectoderm is one of the most critical events in the entire developmental process; it prompts the ectoderm to form a hollow neural tube, which gives rise to the Brain AND SPINAL cord.
Thus begins a new phase of development — Organogenesis, i.e., The formation of specific Tissues and Organs.
The process by which the chordamesoderm initiates The Development of the neural tube from the ectoderm is called primary embryonic induction, and the cellular response to this induction, which results in the Transformation of a flat sheet of ectodermal Cells into a hollow neural tube, is known as neurulation.
