Under certain conditions, some Bacteria (such as Bacillus subtilis) form spores (endospores). A spore is a compact, small Cell that forms inside the vegetative cell, sometimes making up only 1/10 of its volume. The Water content in the spore is extremely low, the metabolic rate is close to zero, and its resistance to heat and desiccation is exceptionally high. Under favorable conditions, spores germinate and resume vegetative growth. The process of sporulation is being intensively studied because it provides insights into the mechanisms of cellular activity regulation in response to environmental conditions.
