Class="center">Meso- and LL-a,ε-diaminopimelic acid

Diaminopimelic acid was first isolated from Corynebacterium diphtheriae [227] and later found in other Bacteria as well [228, 229]. It is possible that this acid is a component of bacterial Proteins; additionally, it occurs in a free state. According to available data, both the meso- and LL-isomers are found in nature (p. 87). Diaminopimelic acid serves as a precursor of Lysine in Escherichia coli (p. 428). Its METABOLISM may be linked to The formation of a, ε-diamino-ß-hydroxypimelic and dipicolinic acids.

a,ε-Diamino-β-hydroxypimelic acid

This amino acid, which has been given the trivial name "tabtoxinine", was isolated from the phytopathogenic toxin of Pseudomonas tabaci [230], the Organism responsible for wildfire disease in tobacco. The Structure of this compound was established through the chemical Cleavage of its molecule and the Analysis of the resulting products. There is a report on the synthesis of a, ε-diamino-ß-hydroxypimelic acid [574]; the configuration of the asymmetric centers in the naturally occurring acid remains unknown. This toxin appears to be a lactone of a-lactylamino-β-hydroxy-ε-aminopimelic acid:
