In many ways, Insulin serves as a model for Peptide Hormones. It was the first hormone in this group to be obtained in purified form, crystallized, and synthesized both chemically and via Introduction/32.html">Genetic Engineering. Research into its Biosynthesis pathways led to the ESTABLISHMENT OF THE propeptide concept. Insulin is of major importance as a therapeutic agent, given that five percent of the population in developed countries suffers from Diabetes Mellitus, with roughly as many individuals being predisposed to the condition. Diabetes mellitus is fundamentally caused by insulin deficiency, associated either with its absence or resistance to its effects. Glucagon, whose action goes unchecked in this situation, exacerbates the severity of the disease.
