Adrenal Cortical Hormones
Biomedical Significance

Adrenal Cortex Hormones, particularly glucocorticoids, play a vital role in adaptation to severe stress. Mineralocorticoids are essential for maintaining Na+ and K+ levels. Synthetic analogues of these hormone classes have found clinical application. Specifically, numerous glucocorticoid analogues are used as potent anti-inflammatory agents. Elevated or reduced Blood levels of any of these three hormone classes (regardless of whether the shift results from disease or ongoing therapy) lead to severe, and sometimes life-threatening, complications. The Study of several inherited enzymatic deficiencies has helped determine the MAIN STAGES OF steroidogenesis and demonstrated that the relative production rates of various hormones in the adrenal cortex can undergo changes.
