Oxidative Phosphorylation enables aerobic organisms to capture a significant fraction of the potential Free energy derived from substrate oxidation. A plausible mechanism for Oxidative phosphorylation is provided by the chemiosmotic theory. A number of drugs (such as amobarbital) and poisons (cyanide, carbon monoxide) inhibit oxidative phosphorylation, typically with fatal consequences. Oxidative phosphorylation is such a vital process that any disruption to its normal course is incompatible with life. This explains why only a small number of Genetic Disorders affecting this system have been identified.
