5. BLOOD BIOCHEMISTRY
5.1. Composition of Blood
Blood, like all other Tissues, consists of Cells and intercellular fluid. The components of blood include erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes, and plasma.
Erythrocytes — red Blood Cells, disc-shaped anucleated cells formed in the Bone Marrow. They transport oxygen with the help of Hemoglobin, which gives blood its red color.
Leukocytes — white blood cells, large opaque cells. They are subdivided into:
- lymphocytes (formed in the Lymph; they give rise to plasma cells that produce Antibodies);
- monocytes (formed in the bone marrow; they engulf Bacteria during phagocytosis).
Thrombocytes (platelets) — very small disc-shaped blood corpuscles formed in the bone marrow. They are not true cells and do not contain nuclei; they play a crucial role in blood clotting.
Blood Plasma — the liquid, colorless intercellular substance consisting of 90% Water, which suspends the blood cells.
