CHAPTER 3. CELL ENGINEERING

Cell engineering is a branch of biology aimed at obtaining new Genetic information through the Hybridization and reconstruction of cultured Cells.

Introduction/5.html">Eukaryotic Cell Cultures are used to synthesize natural chemical compounds and to grow viral biomass required for vaccine production and the Diagnosis of viral diseases. Plant cell cultures are utilized for the microclonal propagation of rare and valuable plants or for The Development of new crop varieties.

The following types of cell cultures are distinguished:

- primary cultures, which can practically be obtained from almost any organ, but die within 2—3 weeks;

- diploid cultures, typically derived from embryonic Tissues, which retain their initial biological properties for a prolonged period (undergoing approximately 50 cell divisions);

- cell (continuous/established) lines, which are capable of existing outside the Organism for decades.
