22.2.3. Incorporation of Manure into Farm Animal Diets
Poultry manure is the primary type added to farm animal diets. The manure is pre-dried and disinfected, and if it contains bedding material, it is ground. This requires specific equipment and significant energy consumption.
Furthermore, there is still no consensus regarding the quality of products obtained from diets supplemented with manure. However, it is anticipated that long-term use of manure as a dietary additive for farm animals increases the accumulation of heavy metals, Antibiotics, and other foreign substances (xenobiotics) in livestock products.
This method also presents a socio-psychological challenge associated with the consumption of products derived from manure-supplemented diets. Consequently, the method is not widely adopted and requires more thorough investigation.
The Traditional Methods outlined above do not fully meet the requirements for waste utilization and disinfection that ensure sanitary, hygienic, and ecological safety while remaining cost-effective. Processing and disinfection expenses for livestock waste can sometimes account for up to 40% of total livestock production costs.
A method that meets these requirements is the anaerobic Digestion of manure biomass using anaerobic methanogenic microorganisms.
