Veins of the Head and Neck
Anterior jugular vein
(v. jugularis anterior) (Figs. 20, 24)
It originates from the subcutaneous Veins OF THE submental region of the neck and runs downwards along the anterior surface of m. sternohyoideus.
Above the jugular notch of the Sternum, both anterior jugular veins enter the spatium interaponeuroticum suprasternale, where they anastomose with each other via the jugular venous arch (arcus venosus juguli). The latter drains into the v. jugularis externa on both the right and left sides and is of particular clinical significance during surgical interventions on the Trachea and Thyroid Gland. V. jugularis anterior may be unpaired.
