Skeletal Changes in Thyroid Disorders
Hyperthyroidism (Graves' Disease)
Hyperthyroidism, or Basedow's disease, is characterized by exophthalmos (Fig. 94), enlargement of The Thyroid Gland, and tachycardia. This hyperfunction does not significantly affect the human Skeletal System. Basedow's disease is extremely rare in children, though thyroid hyperfunction may occasionally cause premature appearance of ossification centers and synostosis. In adults, no skeletal changes occur.
Such patients are treated conservatively or, if necessary, surgically by performing a thyroid resection with removal of the adenoma.
