Percussion

Percussion as a diagnostic method is used to assess the condition of Internal Organs. Orthopedic traumatologists utilize comparative percussion.

Based on the character of the percussion note (dullness or tympany) in chest injuries, the presence of fluid (hemothorax, hydrothorax) or air (pneumothorax) in the pleural cavity is determined. By means of percussion, characterized by a specific tympanic or box-like sound, subcutaneous emphysema can be diagnosed in cases of rib fractures and anaerobic infections. In pelvic and abdominal injuries, percussion of dependent body regions helps diagnose free fluid in the peritoneal cavity, as well as determine the boundaries and degree of distension of the Urinary Bladder, among other Applications.
