Osteomalacia
Osteomalacia is a metabolic bone disease characterized by impaired deposition of Calcium and phosphorus salts in the osteoid tissue (Fig. 82).
According to S.A. Reinberg (1964), several forms of osteomalacia are distinguished. Infantile and juvenile forms are extremely rare and occur exclusively in girls. The most typical is the puerperal form, which manifests In the second half of Pregnancy and progresses with each subsequent pregnancy, as well as occurring in men. This form of osteomalacia is benign, as it progresses very slowly. The senile form, which occurs in women over the age of 50, also has a favorable course.
Thus, osteomalacia can occur in women and men aged 30–40 years, and is 10 times more common in women.
Bone osteomalacia resulting from starvation is also known.
From the etiological standpoint, osteomalacia can be classified into:
1) osteomalacia caused by calcium and Vitamin D deficiency;
2) osteomalacia caused by resistance to vitamin D action;
3) renal osteomalacia.
