Articulation of the sacrum with the fifth lumbar vertebra

A symphysis is normally located between the Base of the sacrum and the body of the fifth lumbar vertebra. The inferior articular processes of the fifth lumbar vertebra and the superior articular processes of the sacrum are connected by the lumbosacral joint (articulatio lumbosacralis), which is structurally similar to the lumbar zygapophysial joints. The joint is reinforced by the iliolumbar ligament (lig. iliolumbale), which extends from the posterior third of the iliac crest and the Medial surface of the iliac ala to the transverse processes and the lateral surface of the bodies of the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae.
