Muscles and Fascia of the Lower Limb
Muscles of the Plantar Surface of the Foot
Lateral Group of Plantar Muscles of the Foot

The Lateral group of the plantar Muscles consists of two muscles: the abductor digiti minimi Muscle of the FOOT and the flexor digiti minimi brevis muscle of the foot.

The abductor digiti minimi muscle of the foot (m. abductor digiti minimi) is located most laterally among all the foot muscles. It originates with tendinous and muscular bundles from the plantar surface of the calcaneal tuberosity and the plantar aponeurosis. It inserts into the lateral surface of the proximal phalanx of the little toe. Function: flexes the proximal phalanx of the little toe, abducts the little toe of the foot.

Innervation: lateral plantar nerve (SI-SII).

The flexor digiti minimi brevis muscle of the foot (m. flexor digiti minimi brevis) is situated medial to the previous muscle. It originates from the plantar surface of the Base of the fifth metatarsal bone on the medial side, the tendon Sheath of the fibularis longus (peroneus longus) muscle, and the long plantar ligament. It inserts into the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. Function: flexes the little toe of the foot.

Innervation: lateral plantar nerve (SІ—SІІ).
