Mefipristone is successfully used for medical abortion. It is a synthetic steroid with a potent antiprogestogenic effect. Its MECHANISM OF ACTION involves blocking specific progesterone receptors and stimulating prostaglandin synthesis in the endometrium, which leads to a progressive increase in uterine contractions and results in the termination of Pregnancy.

The Use of mifepristone in clinical practice is recognized as an alternative to surgical abortion. The drug is administered once at a dose of 600 mg (3 tablets) per os. If no signs of abortion occur within 36–48 hours after taking mifepristone, the patient is prescribed prostaglandin preparations, such as gemeprost at a dose of 1 mg as vaginal suppositories. In the majority of cases, abortion occurs within 4 hours after prostaglandin administration.
