The olfactory Brain, rhinencephalon, is derived from the Forebrain vesicle and represents the oldest and smallest part of the cerebral hemispheres, which evolved in connection with the olfactory receptor.

Topographically, the olfactory brain is divided into two divisions: peripheral and central. The peripheral division is the olfactory lobe, lobulus olfactonus, consisting of: bulbus olfactonus, tractus olfactorius, trigonum olfactonus, substantia perforata antenor. The central division includes: gyrus fomicatus, hippocampus, gyrus dentatus, indusium griseum, gyrus falciformis, gyrus ntralimbicus. These structures and the fibers connecting them not only mediate the SENSE OF SMELL but are also multifunctional entities that form part of the limbic system.
