Development of the thyroid gland

its primordium appears as an invagination into the mesenchyme from the floor of the Pharynx lining between the First and Second pairs of pharyngeal pouches. This hollow invagination, which opens into the pharyngeal pouch cavity between the middle and posterior Tongue buds, is called the thyroglossal duct, ductus thyroglossalis. The end of the duct divides into two parts—the primordia of the left and right lobes of the organ. The thyroglossal duct obliterates, leaving a rudimentary blind opening, the foramen caecum linguae, at its former opening site, located at the apex of the terminal sulcus of the tongue. The epithelial primordium of The Thyroid Gland is divided by the mesenchyme into separate clusters that begin to produce colloid and transform into colloid follicles.
