2. HUMORAL REGULATION

Renal activity is modulated by various Hormones. Antidiuretic hormone, secreted by the posterior pituitary, promotes Water reabsorption in the renal tubules. In the absence of this hormone, urine output can surge up to 25 liters per day.

Adrenaline, a hormone produced by the Adrenal Glands, decreases urine production.

Aldosterone, a hormone of the adrenal cortex, enhances Na+ reabsorption, thereby facilitating the osmotic reabsorption of water and consequently reducing urine output.

When the atria are overstretched by Blood volume, they release natriuretic hormone. This hormone inhibits the reabsorption of Na+ and, consequently, water, thereby increasing urine excretion.

Anterior Pituitary Hormones increase diuresis. Enhanced Urine Formation is also stimulated by thyroxine, a thyroid hormone.
