4. SALIVARY GLANDS
The mucous membrane of the Oral Cavity contains minor Salivary Glands, which are named according to their anatomical Location.
These include the labial, buccal, palatine, and lingual glands. In addition, the ducts of three pairs of major salivary glands open into the oral cavity: the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands (Fig. 7.6).

The parotid gland is situated on the lateral surface of the face, anterior and slightly inferior to the auricle, and fills the retromandibular fossa. Its excretory duct, 5-6 cm in length, runs across the superficial surface of the masseter Muscle, pierces the buccinator muscle, and opens into the Vestibule of the oral cavity on the buccal mucosa opposite the second upper molar tooth.
The submandibular gland is located in the submandibular triangle, slightly inferior to the body of the Mandible. Its excretory duct opens into the oral cavity proper on the sublingual caruncle.
The sublingual gland lies in the sublingual fold on the floor of the oral cavity. Its main excretory duct runs alongside the duct of the submandibular gland and opens next to it or via a common orifice. Several minor ducts open directly along the sublingual fold.
